The Story of Beds and Mattresses

The human body needs rest after a full day's work, during illness or when fatigue makes it impossible to go on without stopping for a while. Since the beginning of civilization, all living things from animals and birds to men, each one has stopped working or discontinued their regular activities for part of the twenty-four stretch of a day. Rest is the best in a comfortable place, and our ancestors were perhaps the most innovative in creating these resting places. Woven mats replaced grass, and the elite and royals had gold adorning their beds. They were the first to have animal shaped legs and the first time that linen came to be in use. As society evolved so did the beds that were used. They began to be artistically designed with canopies and bedposts, ornate and carved head and footboards. They were all made from solid wood with cloth hangings to enclose the sleeping area.
